Day 4 …worse day yet

imageToday was by far the worse day, we seem to be on a decline. Cooper hurt himself last night, he made a jump for food in my daughters hand , and cried so bad. Most horrible sound. Tis morning he cried and dribbled on the floor when he got up, has not gone pee the rest of the day. We seen him have one small drink. He has been crying a lot today when he moves, he had a visitor and did not move from the couch . We also noticed some swelling in his groin area, so I am pretty sure he is heading back to the vet in the morning for a check..

Dad was suppose to go back to work in the morning, he is staying home an extra day. I am so not comfortable being home alone with Coop with all this crying.

Hoping to see him come around tomorrow. This is heart breaking today.

  1. This is so hard…the ups and downs of recovery are just awful!

I’m glad he’s being checked by the vet tomorrow…this not peeing needs to be checked out. He’s probably dehydrated and you may suggest fluids. Sometimes d o gs have to get.fluids the first week and it perks them up and gets them back on schedule.

I’ve forgotten what pain meds he’s on…tramadol and Gabapentin? He may need an adjustment

I KNOW this is sooooooo hard and you’re going crazy with worry and fear. Yep, we’ve all been there waaaaay too often!

Just a thought…make sure vet checks for kidney..bladder stones. I’m sure not peeing is causing a lot of discomfort. He may have to insert a catheter for a quick fix.

Hang in there kiddo! Stay connected to us! And please up date as soon as you can about what the vet says. If you don’t get satisfactory results, get a second opinion. We’re all big on second opinions here,!

  2. Hi Arlene

The first few weeks post surgery can really be a roller coaster. A few days after Tuck’s surgery I was sure he had hurt his one hip – he hadn’t but I was very stressed….makes you question everything about your decision.

The balance between pain meds, mobility, healing, etc etc is really the hardest during the first few weeks. Check in with your vet…ask all of the questions that you need to.

Cooper will feel better – and so will you!

  3. I’m so sorry to hear that Cooper has had a rough time lately. That beautiful boy really looks like he’s not feeling good from the pic. As the others have mentioned there will be highs and lows during the recovery process and this is just a low right now. Cooper is a strong boy and will be moving forward again in no time.

It’s good that he’s going to see the vet. The pain meds may need some adjusting and I’m hoping he just strained/pulled a muscle (something minor) when he made the jump for the food. The urination issue is a little more concerning. When my Leland was younger my grandmother was dogsitting and noticed blood in his urine. He hadn’t made it off the concrete patio to the grass and she noticed a red tinge in the urine. He was taken to a 24hr animal hospital and they diagnosed him with a bladder infection. Later in his life one of his vets diagnosed him with calcium crystals in his urine. X-rays were done but there weren’t any stones formed so he was placed on a special dog food for bladder issues. It helps to keep the pH in the urine from getting out of whack.

Please keep us posted on what the vet finds with Cooper.

Sending Cooper and you a big HUG that things go well today!

  4. That sounds a lot like my day 4.

Frazzled and overwhelmed is probably the only word that can describe how all of us were feeling. My humans are praying for Cooper’s recovery and your emotional well being.

I do want to warn you that the first 3 days can give a false sense of reality. The pain meds are often decreased on day 3 and somewhere around day 4, depression sets in for almost all front leg tripawds….not sure about rear leg ones. This often lasts till the stitches or staples come out. You will question if you made the right decision every day probably every time you look at Cooper. You did, it may just be a bumpy road for the first 2 or 3 weeks.

  5. Oh Cooper! I hope you’re feeling better by now, you look sooooo sad. Keep us posted OK?

And folks, don’t worry, this too shall pass and he WILL get his spunk back, I promise. Hang in there.
