Day 5- still feeling pretty bad

So today was slightly better than yesterday, I mean only the tiniest bit. Cooper went for the one hour drive to the vet this morning, he was able to get out for a pee first! YEah! the vet said they couldn’t see anything wrong with his private parts, except for a fly bite.  He may have pulled a muscle or something . That’s what we were most worried about. His incision is looking good, a small seroma, nothing to worry. They gave him a few more days of tramadol and of the antibiotic. So this all helped relieve some stress. They just said he is in pain from his surgery and needs time to heal.

after a few hours of sleep, he made his way outside and did his business and had a drink, so again , positive steps. He hasn’t moved since. He is not eating, except to take his pills. He has been crying, but a little less than yesterday. He didn’t move for about 6 hours.  This is hard, and I agree with what people have said about the first few days giving a false hope about how good they are doing. There have definitely been times today and yesterday I regret doing the surgery. To see him not moving and crying and hurting is horrible. But I have to believe it will get better in the days to come

  1. Good Morning

    It really will get better!

I’m glad you got Cooper checked out by the vet – that should ease your mind a bit (even if it is just a tiny bit).

Cooper is likely tired and in pain and – even though they need them badly – the meds really do affect them.

Those first few days can really fool us pawrents…our pups are happy to be home and still high on the meds they give them in the clinic.

I know when Tuck came home I hand fed him for a while – even though he had his elevated bowls – and I gave him treats to encourage his appetite – and this was in a pup who needed to lose weight post amp.

Try and rest – watch for small victories – and soon you will see Cooper return to his old self.

    Hugs

  2. Hang in there. Some dogs find it harder and sometimes the Tramadol can have them looking depressed.

Magnum took at least 3 weeks to stop looking depressed. She really only started looking happier after she came off the Tramadol (3 weeks after amputation).

The crying is a bit surprising. Hopefully he is getting enough pain killers.

  3. Better days are coming soon. Molly J’s hardest days were 3-7. Then, things definitely started to consistently improve. Now, 3 weeks after surgery, she’s much more like herself. Try to keep your optimism up. Your Cooper will start to seem more himself too, especially when you can wean him off his pain meds. Positive energy sent your way.

  4. Glad things checked out. I.know it makes.you feel better too…..only SLIGHTLY…but that counts!

I’m not sure if I mentioned this to you before.or not, but I joined here on Day Six of Happy Hannah’s amputation….. My first post was.something.like…com

“SIX DAYS AFTER AMPUTATION AND I FEAR I’VE MADE A HORRIBLE DECISION!!! And let me tell ya’, I felt that way for at least the first two weeks!

    It took.until.Week GREAT.DECISION!!

  5. Oooops! Hit reply a little too quickly! It was at least…at least…week three before I started feeling better about m y decision.

I KNOW it’s soooooo hard to watch Cooper feeling so poorly and being in pain. Just awful. Yeah, I cried a lot.too! I would sit in the car and sob so she wouldn’t see me upset. I tried to keep m y energy around her strong and upbeat.

Is Cooper on Gabapentin as well as Tramadol! That combo seemed to work better for her.

My Happy Hannah was pretty mich miserable from her first day home, so at least I didn’t have to worry.about her straining a muscle or.overdoing it!

Cooper is.doing.exactly what he needs to be doing this week…resting and just going out to do his bidness!

COOPER WILL GET HIS SPARKLE BACK! This IS the best decision for Cooper…he’ll show you!

Now go infuse yourself with some chocolate. It helps!!!

Stay.connected here, We all understand we all know that some recoveries are slower…some faster…and day five for Cooper…..he’s right there in the middle of “normal” recovery. Keep him drinking and eating as best you can.

Sending hugs. Update as often as you can, okay?

  6. Hang in there…Cooper will get back on track. I’m glad to hear his peeing and drinking has turned around.

Leland wasn’t much of an eater that first week. Forget trying to get him to eat dry kibble mixed with whatever grilled meat I made for him. So I went back to cooking him white rice and mixing in pork chops, chicken, or steak and that seemed to do the trick. Because of all the medications he was on (like 6 different meds) he had to eat to keep his tummy from getting upset so I did whatever I had to and if that meant cooking him a NY Strip or Ribeye then that’s what I did. My husband swore Leland ate better than him….lol!

You’re a good mom to Cooper and never doubt your decision…you were doing right by Cooper to try to help him with the pain he was in.

Keep us posted on how things are going…we’re always here to lend support.

Sending Cooper positive thoughts for a speedy recovery!
